On the night before he died, Jesus gathered his twelve apostles around the table to share the Passover meal. There, in the company of those he loved, he gave the world its greatest gift. Taking bread, he said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them: “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.” Then he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.” In that holy supper, Jesus gave himself entirely to his friends — and to us — leaving a living memorial of his love that the Church has treasured at every altar ever since.
The Last Supper reminds us that Christ gives himself to us in love, and asks only that we remember.
