St. Maximilian Kolbe: The Saint Who Gave His Life for a Stranger

Who Was St. Maximilian Kolbe?

St. Maximilian Kolbe was a Catholic priest from Poland who loved Our Lady (Mary) very much. He started magazines and prayer groups to help people grow closer to Jesus and Mary. But during World War II, the Nazis arrested him and took him to a terrible place called Auschwitz, a concentration camp.

Even in this awful place, Fr. Kolbe kept praying, sharing hope, and helping others.

The Powerful Moment of Sacrifice

One day, a prisoner escaped from the camp. As punishment, the guards picked 10 men to die by starvation.

One of the men chosen, Franciszek Gajowniczek, cried out,

“My wife! My children!”

And then something amazing happened.

St. Maximilian Kolbe stepped forward and said:

“I want to take his place.”

The guards were shocked—but they allowed it. So Fr. Kolbe took the man’s place and died so that Franciszek could live.

What Happened Next?

Because of St. Maximilian’s love and bravery, Franciszek Gajowniczek survived the war. He went home to his wife. He saw his children again. Later, he had grandchildren too!

Can you imagine that? Because one man gave his life, a whole family got to live and grow. All those birthdays, hugs, and family dinners happened because of one selfless act.

How Is This Like Jesus?

Jesus did something even greater:
He gave His life for all of us—not just one person.
He died on the cross so we could have eternal life with Him in Heaven.
His love made it possible for everyone to be saved.

Fr. Kolbe followed Jesus’ example. He showed us how real love means giving—even when it’s hard.

Lesson for Kids: Being Selfless

You can make small sacrifices every day:

  • Letting your sibling choose the game 🎮

  • Sharing your treat with a friend 🍪

  • Helping someone when you'd rather be playing 🧸

Every little act of love makes the world brighter—just like St. Maximilian’s did.

Family Activity: The “Kolbe Chain of Love” ⛓️

  1. Cut strips of paper.

  2. On each one, write a way your child can sacrifice something small to show love.

    • "Let my brother pick the movie"

    • "Say a prayer for someone who is sick"

    • "Clean without being asked"

  3. Make a paper chain and add to it daily.

  4. Watch how sacrifice becomes a beautiful chain of love, just like Fr. Kolbe’s choice led to a future filled with love and family.

Prayer to St. Maximilian Kolbe

St. Maximilian Kolbe, you loved like Jesus did.
Help us be brave and selfless, even in small things.
Teach us to give with joy and to love without counting the cost.
Pray for us, that we may grow into saints too. Amen.

Final Thought

St. Maximilian Kolbe reminds us that one act of love can change many lives. When we love like Jesus—giving freely and joyfully—we plant seeds of hope that can grow for generations.
