Our Lady of Fatima: The Lady Who Came to Three Children

In a field in Portugal, Mary appeared to three young shepherds, asked for prayer, and gave the world the message of the Rosary.
In a quiet field in Portugal, three children tending sheep looked up to see a Lady brighter than the sun, standing above a small oak tree.
Our Lady of Fatima is the title Mary took when she appeared in 1917 to three shepherd children — Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta — bringing a message of prayer, penance, and peace.
It’s a story children love because the messengers were children. Our hand-painted Miniature Saint Statues collection includes an Our Lady of Fatima figure to keep her message close.
What Happened at Fatima?
Beginning on May 13, 1917, Mary appeared six times to the three children near the village of Fatima. She asked them to pray the Rosary every day for peace, and to make small sacrifices for the love of God.
On October 13, 1917, a great crowd gathered, and many witnessed the Miracle of the Sun — the sun seeming to dance and spin in the sky. It confirmed for thousands that the children’s Lady was truly from heaven.
“From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me.”
— Luke 1:48–49
The Message of Fatima
Mary’s message at Fatima was simple and urgent: pray, especially the Rosary, and turn back to God. She showed that even children can change the world through prayer and small daily sacrifices.
For a child today, that’s a thrilling truth: God used three ordinary shepherds, no older than they are, to carry a message to the whole world. Holiness isn’t only for grown-ups — it’s for them, right now.
Teaching Kids the Fatima Way
Fatima gives families a clear, doable plan: pray the Rosary, even a decade at a time, and offer little sacrifices to God. The three children prayed simply and gave up small things out of love — exactly what any child can do.
Their example is the heart of it. Francisco and Jacinta, who both died young, are now saints. Children who learn their story learn that the path to heaven is open to them today, through prayer and love.
A Note for Parents
Pray a decade together. Fatima’s great request was the Rosary; even one decade builds the habit.
Tell the children’s story. Lúcia, Francisco, and Jacinta show kids that holiness is for them now.
Offer small sacrifices. Help your child give up something little “for love of Jesus,” the Fatima way.
Keep her in view. An Our Lady of Fatima figure from our Miniature Saint Statues collection keeps her message on your shelf.
Bringing Our Lady of Fatima Home
Fatima turns prayer into something a child can picture: a shining Lady, three shepherds, and a Rosary in small hands. A figure on the shelf keeps that picture — and that invitation — close.
For a shelf or family altar, look for the Our Lady of Fatima figure in our hand-painted Miniature Saint Statues collection. And for the little ones, our plush collection offers soft, huggable companions to hold while they pray.
A Prayer to Our Lady of Fatima
Our Lady of Fatima,
you came to three children with a message of prayer and peace.
Help our family to pray the Rosary,
to make small sacrifices for love of God,
and to trust your Son in everything.
Lead us, like the shepherds, closer to heaven.
Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us. Amen.
Our Lady of Fatima proved that God listens to the prayers of children. The same Lady who came to three shepherds invites every child to pray — and promises that those prayers reach all the way to heaven.
