The Infant of Prague: The Child Jesus, King of All

A small statue of the Christ child dressed as a king — and a centuriesold reminder that Jesus reigns with the heart of a child.

A little child, no taller than a hand, dressed in a king’s robe and crown, one hand raised in blessing. Small enough to hold — and yet the King of all creation.

The Infant of Prague is a beloved image of the Child Jesus as King. For four centuries, Catholic families have loved this little statue as a sign that Jesus rules not with force, but with the heart of a child.

Children feel an instant kinship with a Jesus their own size. Our hand-painted Miniature Saint Statues collection includes an Infant of Prague figure made to bring that wonder home.

What Is the Infant of Prague?

The devotion centers on a small wax-coated statue of the Child Jesus, kept since the 1600s in a church in Prague, in what is now the Czech Republic. The child wears royal robes and a crown, with his right hand raised in blessing and his left holding a small globe topped with a cross.

The robe and crown say he is King. The globe says he reigns over the whole world. And the small raised hand says how he rules — not by power, but by blessing. It’s a king any child can run to without fear.

“For to us a child is born… and he shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace.”

— Isaiah 9:6

Why Families Love This Devotion

The Infant of Prague has long been linked with trust and provision. Families have prayed to the Child Jesus in times of need for generations, leaning on a famous promise of the devotion: “The more you honor me, the more I will bless you.”

But its deepest gift is the picture itself. It shows children that the God who made the stars came as a child — and that they can approach him as easily as they would a friend their own age.

Teaching Kids About the Child King

The Infant of Prague makes a big idea simple: Jesus is King and Jesus is a child who understands them. Both are true, and both are good news.

It’s also a gentle school of trust. Children can bring their small worries to the Child Jesus the way the saints did, learning early that Jesus cares about the things that matter to them.

A Note for Parents

Point to the crown. “Jesus is the King of everything” — and yet he came as a child just for you.

Explain the raised hand. He rules by blessing, not by force — a King who is gentle and safe to approach.

Teach simple trust. Encourage your child to bring small worries to the Child Jesus in prayer.

Keep him in view. An Infant of Prague figure from our Miniature Saint Statues collection sets the Child King where your family prays.

Bringing the Child King Home

A small statue can carry a big truth. The Infant of Prague on a shelf reminds the whole family that the King of all the world came close, as a child, and stays close still.

For a shelf or family altar, look for the Infant of Prague figure in our hand-painted Miniature Saint Statues collection. And for the little ones, our plush collection offers soft, huggable companions to hold while they pray.

A Prayer to the Infant of Prague

Child Jesus, King of all,
you came to us small enough to hold
and great enough to save the world.
We trust you with all that we need.
Bless our family with your gentle reign,
and keep us close to you always.
Infant Jesus, we place our trust in you. Amen.

The Infant of Prague holds two truths a child can carry for life: Jesus is King of all, and Jesus came as a child who understands them. A King that close is one any family can run to with everything.

+ + +

Child Jesus, King of all, reign gently in every home and keep our families trusting in you.
