The Annunciation: The Day an Angel Came to Mary

The angel Gabriel, a young girl in Nazareth, and the message that began the whole story of Christmas.

A quiet house in a small town. A young girl at prayer. And then — an angel, with the most important message ever delivered to anyone on earth.

The Annunciation is the day the angel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her she would be the mother of Jesus. It’s where the Christmas story truly begins — nine months before the manger.

Children are captivated by angels, and Gabriel’s visit is one of the great ones. Our hand-painted Miniature Saint Statues collection includes a Saint Gabriel Archangel figure — the very messenger of this good news.

What Happened at the Annunciation?

God sent the archangel Gabriel to a girl named Mary in Nazareth. He greeted her, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you,” and told her not to be afraid — she had found favor with God.

Gabriel announced that Mary would conceive a son by the Holy Spirit and name him Jesus, the Son of God. Mary asked how this could be, and then gave her great answer: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” With her yes, God’s Son began to come into the world.

“You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.”

— Luke 1:31

Why Gabriel’s Message Matters

The Annunciation is the hinge of the whole story. Everything — Christmas, Easter, our salvation — turns on this moment, when heaven asked and a young girl said yes.

It also shows us how God works: gently, through an invitation, never by force. He sent an angel to ask. For a child, that’s a tender picture of a God who knocks at the door of a willing heart.

Teaching Kids About Angels and Yes

Gabriel gives children a friendly window into the world of angels: real messengers of God, sent to help and to announce his plans. Knowing their names — Gabriel, Michael, Raphael — makes that world feel close.

And Mary’s yes is a lesson every child can live. Saying yes to God in small things — a kind act, an honest word, a prayer when you’d rather not — is exactly how holiness grows.

A Note for Parents

Name the angel. “Gabriel” is the messenger who brought the news — kids love knowing angels by name.

Highlight Mary’s yes. Her “let it be done” is a small prayer your child can borrow when God asks something.

Pray the Hail Mary. Its first words come straight from Gabriel’s greeting at the Annunciation.

Keep him in view. A Saint Gabriel figure from our Miniature Saint Statues collection brings the messenger of Christmas home.

Bringing the Good News Home

The Annunciation is the quiet beginning of everything we celebrate at Christmas. A figure of Gabriel on the shelf reminds the family that good news from God starts with a willing heart.

For a shelf or family altar, look for the Saint Gabriel Archangel figure in our hand-painted Miniature Saint Statues collection. And for the little ones, our plush collection offers soft, huggable angels and saints to love.

A Prayer for the Annunciation

Lord God,
you sent your angel Gabriel to Mary,
and she answered with a trusting yes.
Give our family the grace to say yes to you,
in big things and in small,
and to make room for Jesus in our hearts.
Let it be done to us according to your word. Amen.

The Annunciation is where Christmas begins — not in Bethlehem, but in a small room in Nazareth, when an angel spoke and a young girl said yes. From that yes, the whole world received its Savior.

+ + +

Lord, send your angels to guide every family, and give us Mary’s ready heart to say yes to you.
